Gunfire and explosions have been heard in Sudan’s capital, Khartoum, following days of tension between a notorious paramilitary force and the country’s army.
The latest development revolves around a proposed transition to civilian rule.
According to Reuters, gunshots have been heard near the army headquarters in the city center.
The paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), said one of their camps in Khartoum’s south was attacked while the Army accused RSF fighters of trying to hijack the military headquarters.
Tensions between the military and the paramilitary, known as Rapid Support Forces or RSF, have risen in recent months, delaying the signing of an internationally supported agreement with political parties to restart the country’s democratic transition.
In response to the escalation, the US Embassy in Khartoum advised American citizens on Thursday not to travel to northern Sudan. It also stated that US government employees are not allowed to leave the capital’s metropolitan area until next Thursday.
