The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rep. Femi Gbajabiamila, has extended his congratulations to Nigerian children while expressing his concern over the alarming number of out-of-school children in the country.
On the occasion of this year’s Children’s Day celebration, Gbajabiamila commended the children for their determination to succeed against all odds, citing their numerous accomplishments since the last celebration.
However, he stressed the urgent need for concerted efforts to support Nigerian children in harnessing their potential and realizing their dreams.
The Speaker expressed deep concern regarding the distressing statistics of out-of-school children in the country, which he believes poses a significant threat to the future of Nigeria.
Gbajabiamila highlighted that the realization of the popular saying, “children are the leaders of tomorrow,” lies in the deliberate and strategic formulation and implementation of policies, including legislative frameworks, to provide quality education to Nigerian children and reduce the number of out-of-school children across all levels of government.
Recognizing the pivotal role of the 9th House of Representatives, Gbajabiamila emphasized that the passage of legislation impacting positively on the socio-economic well-being of Nigerians remains a top priority.
The speaker further called on governments at all levels and the private sector to spare no efforts in supporting policies that uphold the rights of Nigerian children, including their inalienable right to a good education.
While urging parents to take responsibility for the holistic development of their children, the Speaker emphasized the importance of not excluding Nigerian children from global competitions and emerging trends in our constantly changing global village.
Gbajabiamila urged parents to remain responsive in providing the necessary care and training for their children, as this contributes to the betterment of both the children and the future of the country.
He then extended his well wishes to the children on this special day, hoping that they will have many more celebrations in the future.
The Speaker’s call for collective action and commitment to addressing the issue of out-of-school children in Nigeria highlights the urgency and significance of providing quality education to secure a prosperous future for the nation’s youth.
