Raymond Dokpesi, a prominent member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the founder of DAAR Communications plc, has passed away at the age of 71, according to a family member.
The media mogul, who played a significant role in shaping the Nigerian broadcasting landscape, reportedly breathed his last at a hospital in Abuja.
The family member, who wished to remain anonymous, revealed that Dokpesi had suffered a stroke shortly after the conclusion of the recent Ramadan fast and had been managing his health since then.
In an attempt to enhance his daily activities and regain mobility, Dokpesi had been undergoing occupational therapy, including regular gym sessions.
However, tragedy struck during one of his routine exercises when he was electrocuted while using a piece of gym equipment. This incident resulted in a stroke from which he ultimately succumbed, a source revealed.
The Dokpesi family is expected to release an official statement regarding the demise of their beloved patriarch in the coming hours.
It is worth noting that in 2020, Raymond Dokpesi, along with several members of his family, had been admitted to the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital after testing positive for COVID-19. Despite their battle with the virus, they successfully overcame the disease.
Renowned for his contributions to the Nigerian media landscape, Dokpesi was the visionary behind the establishment of African Independent Television (AIT) and Raypower FM. Additionally, he held the position of Deputy Director-General of Technical and Systems in Atiku Abubakar’s Presidential Campaign Council.
Further details surrounding his demise are expected to emerge shortly, as the nation mourns the loss of a media icon.
