FOMWAN establishes 147 schools to enhance education

The Federation of Muslim Women’s Associations in Nigeria (FOMWAN) has made significant strides in improving the education sector by establishing 147 schools across the 36 states of Nigeria, as well as the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

FOMWAN’s initiative aims to provide support to governments at all levels in their efforts to enhance education.

Dr. Lateefa Durosinmi, the national Chairperson of FOMWAN, shared this information during the ‘2023 Annual Education Summit’ held in Bauchi on Saturday, June 17, 2023, under the theme of ‘Empowering the Ummah through ICT knowledge.’

According to her, the summit was a deliberate endeavour to raise awareness among the Muslim community about the importance of education.

Durosinmi emphasized that “Education plays a crucial role in the socio-economic, political, scientific, and technological advancement of any society.”

Recognizing education as a tool for eradicating poverty and fostering human development, she stated, “FOMWAN is actively engaged in expanding access to education.”

The association has established a total of 147 nursery, primary, and secondary schools, along with over 2,500 Qur’anic centers, 60 adult literacy classes, and vocational centers that provide educational opportunities for development.

Addressing the growing number of out-of-school children, Durosinmi stressed the need for sustainable strategies to tackle this issue effectively.

To address this, she proposed the introduction of functional literacy and numeracy activities within Qur’anic and almajiri schools. Furthermore, she called for support in establishing education endowment funds to provide scholarships, donate books, and fulfill other educational needs of both boys and girls.

In support of Durosinmi’s statements, Dr. Sumaye Hamza, the Deputy National Chairperson of FOMWAN, emphasized the significance of Information Communication and Technology (ICT) in empowering the youth.
