The leader of the Yoruba socio-political organization, Ayo Adebanjo, has described President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration as illegitimate despite its declaration as the winner of the February 25 presidential election by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.
Adebanjo questioned the election which produced the Nigerian President earlier in the year. He stressed that the process was laced with irregularities hence Tinubu cannot be recognized as president of the country.
Speaking on one of Nigeria’s television stations, Arise Television, Adebanjo printed that the presidential poll was inconclusive with the ongoing presidential Election Petition Tribunal in Abuja.
According to Adebanjo: “Afenifere’s stance, for now, is not to comment on Tinubu’s administration because we believe that the elections are not completed yet; it’s still in progress, that is why we are in court, so commenting on someone who is there and who we don’t believe should be there until the final decision of the court will be probative and reprobative.
“We are not talking about his ability, we are talking about the process of his getting there, which is flawed. How can you build something on nothing, he is enjoying a lacuna, nothing is settled until it’s finally settled, that’s our stance.
“I refuse to comment on somebody that is not existing yet until the final arbiter of the court, our party may be wrong but that is our own stance. I can’t recognize him in an office that I believe doesn’t exist.”
The Afenifere leader, who is a staunch supporter of Peter Obi of the Labour Party, has been criticised for his continuous campaigns against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
In the run up to the presidential election, the Yoruba Council Worldwide accused the leader of pan-Yoruba socio-political Afenifere, Pa Ayo Adebanjo, of embarking on a campaign of calumny against Tinubu.
“If you’ve been following Baba Ayo Adebajo’s approach, it is a campaign of calumny against Asiwaju. It is not because of his (Tinubu’s) aspiration now, he (Adebanjo) has always been on that. At any given instance, Asiwaju will always come to the fore,” the President of the group, Oladotun Hassan, stated on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily programme.
