10 million users sign up as Facebook launches Twitter-like app ‘Threads’

Meta’s newly launched Threads app attracted ten million users in its first seven hours, according to the company’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg.

Zuckerberg described the app as a “friendly” competitor to Twitter, which Elon Musk purchased in October.

According to experts, Threads could appeal to Twitter users who are dissatisfied with recent platform modifications.

The Twitter-like app allows users to post up to 500 characters, and has many features similar to Twitter.

Earlier, Mr Zuckerberg said keeping the platform “friendly… will ultimately be the key to its success”

Meta, the company that owns Facebook and Instagram, described the new app as an “initial version,” with additional features planned such as the ability to engage with people on other social media apps such as Mastodon.

“Our vision with Threads is to take what Instagram does best and expand that to text,” the company stated this prior to the launch.

Despite the fact that Threads is a standalone app, can log in with their Instagram account. Their Instagram account is retained, but they can modify their profile exclusively for Threads.

Celebrities such as Kim Kardashian and Jennifer Lopez, as well as famous politicians such as Democratic U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, were among the first to join the new platform.

In response to a user who forecast Twitter’s downfall barely an hour after Threads launched, Zuckerberg advised patience. “We’re only in the first round right now,” he explained.
