Mrs Betty Akeredolu, the wife of Ondo State Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, has canceled all planned celebrations for her 70th birthday.
The governor’s wife announced the suspension following a barrage of condemnations that came with her wish to celebrate her new age.
Her followers challenged the need for a celebration when her husband, Rotimi Akeredolu, is currently struggling with his health.
In a sharp u-turn, Betty announced on Twitter that the birthday celebration had been suspended “due to unforeseen circumstances beyond my control.”
Mrs Akeredolu noted that as long as there is life, ‘Owambe’ (party) can come some other time.
She said in the tweet: “Hello Family and Friends.
“This is to inform you that all activities lined up to mark my 70th birthday are hereby suspended till further notice due to unforeseen circumstances beyond my control. Sorry for any inconvenience caused by this development.
“Nevertheless, be assured that I will be celebrated in style upon my return. Thank you for your understanding. I remain Arabinrin a.k.a Ada Owere I.”
i-News Nigeria earlier reported that Governor Akeredolu has been struggling with undisclosed health problems for some months. It was reported at a time that the governor had passed due to his failing health.
The Ondo State Government debunked the rumours, saying: “Though the Governor has been indisposed, he has been attending to state matters and delegating functions to functionaries of the Government, when necessary. We enjoin the members of the public to ignore the rumour. Aketi is very much alive.” The State Commissioner for Information and Orientation Bamidele Ademola-Olateju said in a statement.
The main oppositions Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and the Social Democratic Party, SDP, have called upon Akeredolu to resign.
