Nwankwo Kanu, a former Arsenal and Nigeria forward, has been appointed chairman of Nigerian league champions Enyimba.
The appointment was announced by Governor Alex Otti of Abia.
Kanu is reuniting with former Ajax teammate George Finidi, who is the Head Coach of the Abia State-based club.
Head Coach Finidi led the State Government-owned Enyimba to a record ninth (9th) league title last season and a place in next season’s CAF Champions League, Africa’s most important inter-club competition.
Kanu has taken over from Felix Anyansi-Agwu, who headed “The People’s Elephant” for 24 years during which the club won two Caf Champions League winners’ medals, according to Voice of Nigeria.
Kanu succeeds Felix Anyansi-Agwu, who led the People’s Elephant for 24 years, winning two CAF Champions League titles.
Kanu and Finidi were members of Louis van Gaal’s Ajax team who won the UEFA Champions League in 1995 after defeating Serie A heavyweights AC Milan 1-0 at the Ernst-Happel Stadium in Vienna, Austria.
Finidi expressed happiness as additional ex-internationals took up coaching posts in the league after winning the league at the end of the Super 6 last June 2023.
Enyimba’s coach now has an ex-teammate as his team’s administrator as they prepare to return to the CAF Champions League in August.
