Senator Abubakar Kyari, the Deputy National Chairman (North) of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has assumed the role of the party’s acting national chairman.
Kyari’s appointment came after a National Working Committee (NWC) meeting held in Abuja on Monday, where he succeeded Senator Abdullahi Adamu as the party’s chairman.
Following the NWC meeting, Kyari officially announced the resignations of Adamu and Senator Iyiola Omisore from their positions as the party’s National Chairman and National Secretary, respectively.
In accordance with the party’s constitution, Festus Fuanter, the Deputy National Secretary, will serve as the acting National Secretary of the APC.
Notably, Adamu was absent from the NWC meeting, while Omisore walked out during the gathering at the party secretariat in Abuja.
Kyari, who previously represented Borno North Senatorial District in the 9th National Assembly, chaired the APC NWC meeting.
Adamu’s Political Journey
In March 2022, Adamu assumed the role of APC national chairman, approximately two years after the dissolution of the Adams Oshiomhole-led National Working Committee (NWC).
Adamu previously served as the governor of Nasarawa State from May 1999 to May 2007. He represented Nasarawa West Senatorial District in the National Assembly from May 2011 to April 2022.
During the lead-up to the APC presidential primary in June 2022, Adamu publicly declared then Senate President Ahmad Lawan as the party’s consensus candidate. However, this announcement faced strong opposition from a group of northern governors who favored former Lagos State governor Bola Tinubu.
Ultimately, Tinubu emerged as the party’s flag bearer, defeating Lawan, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, former Transport Minister Rotimi Amaechi, and other influential figures within the APC. Tinubu went on to win the presidential election held on February 25, 2023.
Since Tinubu’s victory, there have been internal disputes between the faction supporting him and other factions within the APC. However, the party had dismissed these conflicts as typical political disagreements.
On July 4, 2023, Adamu rejected the list of principal officers for the 10th National Assembly (NASS) announced by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, arguing that Tajudeen Abbas, the House of Representatives Speaker, was not affiliated with the party’s secretariat.
During the Politics Today program on Channels Television on July 12, 2023, Omisore referred to Salihu Lukman, the Vice-Chairman of the party in the North-West, as a “black sheep.” In response, Lukman, who had accused Omisore of mismanaging campaign funds in Osun State during the recently concluded general election, retaliated by stating that Adamu and Omisore were attempting to become autocrats within the party
