The Kwara State House of Assembly has called upon the government to take swift action in controlling the spread of diphtheria in the state.
During a session, House Leader Barrister Abdulkadir Magaji raised a Matter of General Public Importance titled “Ensuring Surveillance against the Outbreak of Diphtheria in the State.”
Barrister Magaji provided a detailed explanation of diphtheria’s symptoms, mode of transmission, and treatment.
He emphasised the importance of comprehensive vaccination to protect the citizens from this bacterial disease.
Other lawmakers echoed the need for proactive measures by the government to prevent diphtheria, highlighting that “prevention is more cost-effective than treatment.”
Speaker Engr. Yakubu Danlad-Salihu read out the resolutions, urging the state government to enhance disease surveillance efforts.
The State Ministry of Health was tasked with developing strategies to prevent the outbreak of diphtheria in Kwara State.
Engineer Salihu also called upon the State Ministry of Communications “to conduct awareness campaigns and educate the public about the importance of taking precautions against the spread of diphtheria.”
