The House of Representatives has announced that it will probe the contents of the controversial vessel that was destroyed by the Nigerian security forces.
The resolution was reached on Tuesday after a motion filed on the House floor by Thomas Ereyitomi (Warri Federal Constituency).
Ereyitomi, who introduced the motion, decried the burning of the MT TURA II vessel, stating that it could further harm the fragile environment of the oil producing community.
He stated that the vessel was carrying 150,000 metric tons of stolen crude oil when it was apprehended.
“Setting ablaze stolen crude oil laden vessels will further destroy the well-endowed ecosystem of the Niger Delta region, already ravaged by oil exploration.
“This act, if allowed to continue, will further affect the livelihood and the overall wellbeing of the Niger Delta people, who have fishing as their main occupation,” he said.
The House agreed to form an ad hoc committee to examine the vessel’s contents.
The House called on security agencies to stop setting fire to vessels carrying stolen crude oil.
They charged the Committee on Environment (when it was formed) with ensuring compliance.
Recall that the Security Operatives of the Joint Task Force, Operation Delta Safe, in collaboration with Tantita Security Services Nigeria Limited, set ablaze an intercepted vessel carrying barrels of stolen crude oil in the Escravos area of Delta State.
The Federal Government defended the destruction of the vessel, while explaining that it is in line with the rules of engagement.
