Sokoto Appeal Court upholds ruling directing Customs to pay ₦100m to slained citizen

The Appeal Court in Sokoto has upheld the verdict of the Federal High Court in Kebbi State, which ordered the Nigeria Customs Service to pay 100 million naira and write public and personal apologies to the relatives of late Abdurrahaman Sani.

In November 2020, Abdurrahaman Sani was killed in his car in Fingila village of Dandi local government area of Kebbi State on his way to the farm by a Customs personnel operating from Bunza to Kamba border.

Speaking to Radio Nigeria in Birnin Kebbi, the counsel to the complainant, Barrister Umar Aminu Kalgo, expressed delight with the Appeal Court Sokoto’s decision to uphold the lower court’s decision.

Barrister Aminu Kalgo, said the three sitting Judges headed by Justice M R Maiwada, the judgement had shown that, the right of the citizens of the country is being protected by the court of law and particularly the common man.

Barrister Kalgo expressed optimism common Nigerians can now understand that they can fight for their rights in court if any authority violates their basic rights.

Malam Muhammadu Sani Bunza, the father of the deceased, professed his delight with the decision of Appeal Court, Sokoto, stating that it demonstrated that the average man of the country can seek redress in a court of law if an illegality was passed on him by any authority.
