Breaking: National Assembly Aims For A 20% Boost In Maritime Sector’s Contribution To GDP

The National Assembly is aiming for a substantial increase, targeting a 20% contribution from the maritime sector to the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 2024, according to statements made by Abdussamad Dasuki, Chairman of the House Committee on Shipping Services. Speaking at a special performance retreat organized by the Nigerian Shippers’ Council in Lagos, Dasuki emphasized that the current contribution of the sector is below one percent, and concerted efforts will be made to bring about the necessary changes.

Addressing the event, Dasuki expressed the commitment of the National Assembly to collaborate with the Nigerian Shippers’ Council as the regulator of the crucial maritime sector. He outlined plans to expedite the enactment of a backup law to provide legal support to the council, ensuring it has the authority to carry out its responsibilities effectively. The discussions at the retreat also focused on strengthening economic regulation within the Marine and Blue Economy, with proposals for the establishment of a Nigerian Shipping Commission Council.

In his opening remarks, Akutah Ukeyima, the Executive Secretary/Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council, highlighted the council’s history of driving innovation and progress in global trade. He underscored the importance of the retreat as a collective effort to shape the nation’s economic future, particularly in the marine and blue economy sector. Ukeyima emphasized the significance of effective governance, equitable practices, and strategic policies in fostering a thriving blue economy, positioning it as a catalyst for sustainable development and prosperity.
