The First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has fulfilled her commitment to support the healthcare delivery efforts of Nigerians in Diaspora, Sierra Leone Chapter (NIDO, SL) by making a generous donation of $100,000. This donation, as outlined in an official press statement by the organization, is a realization of her promise to contribute to the construction of a state-of-the-art medical center for Nigerians residing in Sierra Leone.
Abiodun Oyebola, the President of NIDO in Sierra Leone, had sought Senator Oluremi’s support, highlighting the urgent need for a medical facility due to the deteriorating state of healthcare infrastructure in Sierra Leone. The NIDO medical center, once completed and operational, will significantly address the medical needs of over 40,000 Nigerians living in Sierra Leone. It aims to complement the ongoing efforts of President Julis Maada Bio to bridge gaps in the health sector.
Senator Oluremi Tinubu had engaged with members of the Nigerians in Diaspora, Sierra Leone during her visit to the country on Sunday, November 19, 2023, as the Special Guest of Honour for the UN World Day commemoration hosted by Her Excellency, Dr. Fatima Bio, the First Lady of Sierra Leone.
The press statement expressed gratitude for the donation from the Renewed Hope Initiative, the humanitarian project championed by Senator Tinubu. It emphasized the significant impact of this contribution in alleviating healthcare challenges faced by Nigerians in Sierra Leone, particularly given the aftermath of the brutal 11-year civil war that ravaged the country’s social infrastructure.
NIDO Sierra Leone, recognized as a trailblazer among various NIDO chapters worldwide, has consistently played a leading role in fostering unity among Nigerians in the diaspora. The NIDO medical center project, a non-profit initiative, stands out as the first of its kind in the diaspora. Notably, NIDO Sierra Leone remains the first chapter to receive the esteemed First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, showcasing their commitment to national unity and healthcare improvement.
