Police resorted to firing gunshots to scatter demonstrators in Minna, the capital of Niger State, who were protesting the escalating cost of living. At 7 am on Monday, Feb. 5th, a gathering of women obstructed Minna-Bida Road at the well-known Kpakungu roundabout to voice their concerns about the surging prices of essential commodities.
Subsequently, men joined the protest, causing a blockade of vehicular movement. The police’s attempts to manage the crowd nearly led to violence, as protesters demanded the withdrawal of the police presence, prompting the law enforcement to discharge multiple shots into the air.
