One Killed, Two Held As Commercial Drivers Clash In Lagos

A commercial bus driver, Abiodun Hassan, 36, has been killed and others injured after a violent clash erupted in the Ogba area of Lagos.

The clash, said to be between ‘Korope’ riders and commercial motorcycles, erupted on Friday night at the bus stop.

It was gathered that a mob of motorcycle operators had swooped on the bus thinking it was occupied by policemen enforcing the ban of bikes on certain routes.

An angry Hassan, it was gathered, alighted from his bus to query the mob’s action but he was immediately assaulted and stabbed with a sharp object on his chest region.

Colleagues of the bus driver who witnessed what transpired were said to have mobilised and went after the riders leading to a violent clash.

According to residents, the situation which almost degenerated to an ethnic clash but for the intervention of security operatives, continued yesterday morning.

Sources told the newsmen that people were afraid to move around yesterday morning as machete-wielding youths patrolled Ogba Bus Stop and environs in search of Hassan’s killers

Confirming the incident, police spokesman, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, said two suspects were arrested.

He said the motorcycle riders who were at the Oluwole area of Ogba around 11pm, attacked the commercial mini bus.

Hundeyin confirmed that the attackers thought the occupants of the bus were police officers on duty.

He identified those arrested as Nura Seyidu and Yusuf Abubakar, adding that the bus driver was rushed to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) for treatment but passed on there.
