Labour Party’s Gov Candidates Demand Party Overhaul For 2027 Elections

The Forum of Gubernatorial Candidates 2023/2024 of the Labour Party has issued a strong call for the restructuring and repositioning of the party in anticipation of the 2027 elections.

It stressed the need for the party to adapt to contemporary needs and challenges, aiming to enhance its relevance and effectiveness in Nigerian politics.

In a communique issued in Abuja on Monday, the forum called for the urgent convening of party congresses at all levels.

The document was signed by eight candidates from various states: Ken Pela (Delta State), Beatrice Itubo (Rivers State), Jonathan Asake (Kaduna State), Chijioke Edeoga (Enugu State), Adedjo Desmond Okeme (Kogi State), Keftin Esau Amuga (Gombe State), Joseph Ewuga (Nassarawa State), and Udengs Eradiri (Bayelsa State).

These signatories described the congresses as a pivotal step towards restructuring and repositioning the Labour Party for the 2027 elections.

The communique read, “The Forum urgently calls for the quick and imminent convening of the party congresses at all levels. This is pivotal for the total restructuring and repositioning of the Labour Party geared toward 2027, aligning it with contemporary needs and challenges.

“We emphasize the critical importance of this event in rejuvenating our party and ensuring that it remains a formidable force for positive change in Nigeria.”

However, the forum did not shy away from addressing internal challenges. It vehemently condemned factions within the Labour Party, particularly the Lamidi Apapa faction, for their divisive activities.

“We express our strong disapproval of the divisive activities of these factions, which only serve to undermine the unity and progress of our party. We urge all members to rally behind the leadership of the party and to reject any attempts at division. We also reprimand the press for giving undue coverage to the illegal activities of these factions and their members, which can harm the reputation and integrity of the Labour Party,” the communique added.

The gubernatorial candidates also expressed deep concern over Nigeria’s current state of insecurity and economic hardship, advocating for urgent and concerted efforts to address these issues.

They called on the government to prioritize the safety and well-being of Nigerians, emphasizing the need for policies that promote economic growth, social welfare, and national stability.

The Forum lamented, “We decry the high cost of living, soaring prices of goods and services, and the adverse effects these have on our nation and its citizens.

“We call for urgent and concerted efforts from all stakeholders to address these pressing issues, advocating for policies that promote economic growth, social welfare, and national stability.

“We call on the government at all levels to prioritize the safety and well-being of Nigerians, addressing the root causes of insecurity and implementing sustainable economic policies. It is imperative that we work together to create a nation where every citizen can thrive and contribute to its prosperity.

Highlighting recent achievements, the forum lauded the success of the gubernatorial primary election in Edo State, congratulating Barrister Olumide Akpata for his victory.

The candidates emphasized the party’s commitment to fairness and inclusivity, vowing to support Akpata in ensuring a win for the party in Edo State, the heart of the Obidient Movement.

They exoressed, “We particularly congratulate Barrister Olumide Akpata for emerging as the winner of the primaries and applaud the party’s commitment to a transparent and democratic process, which reflects our core values of fairness and inclusivity.

“We commit to place our collective experience at the disposal of the Edo candidate and work together to ensure the party wins in the state that is regarded as the Capital of the Obidient Movement.”
