Former Labour Leader Ali Ciroma Dies At 91

A former president of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Ali Ciroma, is dead.

He was 91. Ciroma died on Tuesday night at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital in Borno State after a brief illness.

He will be buried today in Borno.

Ibrahim Ciroma, a relation of the deceased and secretary of the NUJ in Borno state, announced Ciroma’s death in a statement on Tuesday.

The statement reads: “It is with deep sorrow that I announce the death of Comrade Ali Ciroma, former President of the Nigeria Labour Congress.

“The sad event occurred this evening (Tuesday, April 2) at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.

“The burial for the repose of the deceased will be held tomorrow Wednesday 4pm at the residence of the deceased, No.7A along Galadima Road, near Muhammadu Shuwa Memorial Hospital (Nursing Home), Maiduguri.”

Ciroma served as NLC president from 1984 to 1988.

Ciroma’s reign as NLC president came to an end in 1988 after the union was dissolved by Ibrahim Babangida, the former Military President.

In 1993, Sani Abacha, former military head of state, appointed Ciroma as head of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG).
