The Kwara State High Court has sentenced to death by hanging, five persons involved in the infamous Offa bank robbery in 2018.
Delivering the verdict, the Presiding Judge, Justice Halimah Salman stated that the maximum sentence was awarded as a result of the gravity of the crimes committed.
Justice Salman affirmed that the judgement will discourage criminal activities in the society.
“This sentence serves as a deterrent to potential criminals and brings closure to the families of the victims.”
The convicts were found guilty of armed robbery, culpable homicide and unlawful possession of firearms.
The deadly Offa bank robbery, which occurred on April 5, 2018, resulted in death of thirty-three people, including security personnel, and left many others injured.
The landmark judgement has put paid to widespread condemnation and calls for justice which trailed the incident.
