INEC announces APC candidate Idris Kebbi governor-elect
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced Idris Nasiru of the All Progressives Congress (APC), as the winner of the Kebbi state governorship election.
The APC candidate received 409,225 votes to beat his closest rival, Bande Aminu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who got 360,940 votes.
Saidu Yusuf, the returning officer, declared the APC candidate as the winner, on Sunday.
Declaring Idris the winner of the closely contested election, the Returning Officer said: “I, Professor Yusuf Saidu, hereby certify that I am the Returning Officer for the 2023 Kebbi State Governorship Election held on the 15th day of April, 2023.
“That Idris Nasiru of APC, having satisfied the requirements of the law, is hereby the winner and is returned elected.”
It will be recalled that Nigeria’s electoral umpire, INEC, declared the March 18 Kebbi gubernatorial election inconclusive over what it described as “massive vote cancellation and overvoting” in 20 of the 21 LGAs in the state.
The electoral commission then fixed April 15 for a supplementary election due to the reasons cited.
The Independent National Electoral Commission on Saturday conducted supplementary elections for the governorship seats in Kebbi and Adamawa states and five senatorial seats in Sokoto, Kebbi and Zamfara states.
The electoral umpire also carried out supplementary polls for 30 federal constituencies seats for the House of Representatives across 15 states.
The states where elections were held are Sokoto, Kebbi, Adamawa, Edo, Anambra, Enugu, Plateau, Yobe, Zamfara, Bayelsa, Jigawa, Imo, Kano, Kogi, Oyo, Rivers, Taraba and Zamfara.
The winning candidate must secure the majority of the vote and at least 25% of the vote in two thirds of the LGAs.
