Seyi Makinde, Wike drum support for Bola-Ahmed Tinubu administration

The governors of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike and Oyo State, Seyi Makinde have pledged their maximum support for the administration of president-elect, Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The two opposition governors from the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, made this pledge on Friday when they paid a visit to the President-elect at the Defence House, Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.

Some governors from the ruling All Progressives Congress also visited the president-elect. They are Abubakar Bagudu of Kebbi State, Abubakar Badaru of Jigawa and Bello Matawalle of Zamfara State.

Speaking with newsmen after the meeting, the Oyo State governor said: “We are here to let him know that elections are over – this is governance and we will do our best to give him support.”

In his part, the Rivers State governor also pledged his backing for the incoming Tinubu administration and expressed optimism that he (Tinubu) will turn the country around as he has done while serving in Lagos.

“Just like my friend (Mr Makinde) said, a winner has emerged and therefore it is alright to give necessary support in the interest of Nigeria. I have the confidence that he has what it takes to turn Nigeria around,” he said.

Messrs Wike and Makinde are members of the G5 governors, which include Samuel Ortom of Benue, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu and Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia States, all members of the PDP.

The aggrieved G5 members worked against the party interests in their respective states in the February 25 presidential election.

Three of the ‘Integrity Group’ G5 failed in their quests to cross over to the Senate after their two-term tenure of eight years each.

Recall that The five governors formed an alliance after the party’s presidential primary in May 2022, to demand that the PDP National Chairman, Iyorchia Ayu step down for a southern candidate as a precondition to support the presidential ambition of the party’s flag bearer, Atiku Abubakar in the February 25 poll.

Both the PDP presidential flag bearer and the Chairman called the governors’ bluff and did not succumb to their demands.
