The contest for the English Premier League was today settled as Manchester City won the title for the fifth time in six seasons after second-placed Arsenal lost 1-0 at Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

Nigeria’s Taiwo Awoniyi’s goal was enough to condemn the gunners to a second consecutive defeat leaving the Londoners four points adrift of City with one game left for them to play.

Awoniyi’s winning goal also helped Forest to be safe from relegation in their first season back in the top flight in 23 years.

The latest honour could be the start of a treble chase as Pep Guardiola’s men face Manchester United in the FA Cup final and Inter Milan in the Champions League final next month.

City will lift the trophy after they play Chelsea on Sunday (16:00 BST).

Captain Ilkay Gundogan – who has scored four goals in the last two league games – said: “The Premier League is without doubt the most demanding and competitive league in the world, so that tells you everything about what an achievement this is.

“To have won this trophy three times in a row and five times in six years is incredible. That quality and consistency helps sum up what Manchester City stand for and ensures the club will continue to strive for success going forward.

City are only the fifth club to win three top-flight titles in England in consecutive order, following Huddersfield Town (1924-26), Arsenal (1933-35), Liverpool (1982-84) and Manchester United, who did it twice under Sir Alex Ferguson (1999-2001 and 2007-09).
