Harland emerges Premier League player of year 2023, Guardiola urges City players to go for trebles
Manchester City’s Erling Haaland has been named Premier League Player of the Season after a remarkable season with his new English club.
He was nominated for the prestigious accolade alongside teammate Kevin De Bruyne and Arsenal’s Bukola Saka, as well as Harry Kane and others.
Haaland secured the honour with 36 Premier League goals this season.
He is the fourth player to receive the Man City Player of the Year title, following Kevin De Bruyne in 2019/20 and 2021/22, Ruben Dias in 2020/21, and Vincent Kompany in 2011/12.
The 22-year-old has 36 league goals in his 35 Premier League matches, surpassing a 29-year record for the most strikes in a Premier League season.
He has also provided eight assists while guiding City to a third consecutive Premier League title and the FA Cup and Champions League finals in June.
His 44 total goal involvements are the joint most in history, matching a record set by former Arsenal attacker Thierry Henry in the 2002/03 season.
Before the latest honour, Haaland has already won the 2023 Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year award, after he secured more than 80% of the vote.
He has also been nominated for the PFA Player of the Season award.
In the meantime, Pep Guardiola has called on his players to enjoy the possibility of winning three trophies this season.
The team lifted the Premier League last weekend and have an FA Cup final and Champions League final to come in the final two games of the season.
“They know and everyone knows the position,” he said in his press conference ahead of the clash at Brentford on Sunday at 16:30.
“The position we are in comes once in a lifetime maybe twice but not much. Being champions of the Premier League again – three games before the end, playing two finals, – it doesn’t come every season.
“Once we are there, we have to first of all relax and enjoy it and then do your best. No one can be sure when we will be back in this position again,” Guardiola said.
