Flying Eagles of Nigeria stun Argentina to reach quarter-finals

The Flying Eagles of Nigeria advanced to the FIFA U-20 World Cup quarterfinals after defeating Argentina, the host, by 2-0.

Nigeria ended a run of 10 straight U-20 World Cup wins for Argentina on their home soil.

La Abliceleste had won all seven games when they hosted the tournament in 2001, and their first three at the 2023 championship.

Second-half goals from Ibrahim Muhammad and Rilwanu Haliru Sarki ended the dreams of hosts and title favourites, Argentina, to send Nigeria into the FIFA U-20 World Cup quarter-finals.

The Flying Eagles will face either Ecuador or South Korea in the quarterfinals.

After a stunning 2-0 victory over Argentina in the Round of 16, Flying Eagles head coach, Ladan Bosso reflected on the team’s incredible performance and future aspirations.

Bosso emphasized the team’s accomplishment by underlining the thorough execution of their game plan: “We stuck to our game plan, and we got it right,” the players’ discipline and commitment to the coaching staff’s tactics paid off nicely, resulting in a comfortable victory over Argentina, he said.

Meanwhile, Super Eagles coach Jose Peseiro has congratulated Nigeria’s Flying Eagles, following their 2-0 win against hosts, Argentina.

“Brilliant game today,” Peseiro wrote on Twitter.

“Proud of our U20 team who fought valiantly and emerged victorious against Argentina. This is a testament to their determination, skill, and the spirit of Nigerian football. Onward to the quarter-finals! 🇳🇬⚽️🏆.”

The victory against the host is the first time ever the Flying Eagles will beat a South American team at the U-20 World Cup.
