Nicola Sturgeon, Scotland’s former leader, arrested in financial inquiry
Former leader of Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon, has been arrested as part of a financial inquiry.
This was disclosed in a report released on June 11, 2023.
According to the report, the arrest comes after her husband, who was previously the chief executive of the Scottish National Party (SNP), and the party’s former treasurer were also arrested.
The report revealed that Nicola Sturgeon, who led the SNP until her unexpected resignation in February, was taken into custody by the police officers investigating the party’s finances.
“This development intensifies the crisis faced by the SNP, which advocates for Scottish independence,” the report unveiled.
Earlier, Nicola Sturgeon’s husband, Peter Murrell, and Colin Beattie, the former treasurer, were questioned and subsequently released without charges.
This recent turn of events marks a significant downfall for Nicola Sturgeon, a well-liked politician who served as Scotland’s first minister for over eight years before her resignation.
Nicola Sturgeon served as Scotland’s First Minister for more than eight years, succeeding Alex Salmond following the independence referendum in 2014. She announced on February 15 that she would step down as both SNP leader and First Minister once a successor was elected. Humza Yousaf emerged as the winner of the leadership contest.
Sturgeon maintained that her decision to step down was based on her personal conviction that it was the right time to go and denied any influence from the ongoing police investigation.
She holds the distinction of being Scotland’s longest-serving First Minister and the first woman to hold the position.
