Shettima under fire over “Christian better than Northern Muslim senate presidency” claim
Barrister Sani Mohammed Takori has joined growing voices to berate Vice president Kashim Shettima over his recent utterance where he allegedly said “the worst and incompetent Southern Christian was better than the Northern Muslim in the senate presidency.”
The former member of the House of Representatives said the statement is unfortunate and directed the former senator, now vice president, to withdraw his words with immediate effect.
In a statement, Rep. Takori pointed out that the unceremonious claim is a premeditated charge against the North and particularly, North West, Senator-elect, former Governor of Zamfara State, Abdul’Aziz Yari.
“We felt aggrieved by this assertion as it comes directly from no other person but the Vice President who is our own, it was quite unfortunate”, he said.
As a true democrat, Takori, pleaded with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to dismiss such sentiment and give room for a free and fair election in today’s election in the National Assembly.
“We are quite aware that President Tinubu is a true democrat, so he would never succumb to undemocratic posture, especially, in the election of National Assembly leadership”, he emphasized
In order to guarantee the independence of the National Assembly, the former lawmaker urged the newly elected senators to resist any act of governmental imposition and choose the leadership of their preference.
“As Senators-elect, don’t allow a stooge to lead the Senate if at all you want true democratic development to strive in the country,” he added.
Vice president Kashim Shettima has come under fire after he allegedly said “the worst and incompetent Southern Christian was better than the Northern Muslim in the senate presidency.”
Shettima, a former senator, is pushing for a Southern Christian to emerge as the next Senate President ahead of today’s election at the parliament.
According to Shettima: “I’m ready to kneel and beg my colleagues for the sake of the nation. This is for the survival of this nation.
“Here we are with a Muslim president and a Muslim vice-president in a multi-ethnic, multi-religious polity like ours.
“Number 1, 2. All of the same faith for God sake.
“Under the current dispensation, the worst, the most incompetent Southern Christian is better than the most puritanical Northern Muslim for the Presidency of the Senate.”
No official statement has been issued by his office to further clarify his statement as of the time of this report.
