The Ghanaian minister of Sanitation resigned her position on Saturday after accusations emerged that her domestic workers stole heavy cash from her residence. She denied wrongdoing in a letter of resignation to President Nana Akuffo-Ado.

Cecilia Abena Dapaah came to the limelight on Friday after two of her former domestic workers were charged with stealing money and personal goods from the minister and her husband between July and October 2022.

Prosecutors informed the court that the accused used stolen money to buy houses and a vehicle, as well as give some of it to family members.

The accused domestic workers are yet to respond to the allegations.

However, newspaper reports in Ghana about the $1 million, $300,000 euros, and millions of local cedis reportedly found and stolen from the residence of the minister provoked social media anger and calls for her immediate resignation.

In her resignation letter, the embattled Minister of Sanitation stated that the figures widely online quoted do not correctly represent what she and her husband reported to the police.

She said she resigned her position because she does not want the matter to become a preoccupation of the Ghanaian government, while adding that she would “no doubt” be exonerated.

Some members of President Nana Akufo-Addo’s government have been embroiled in corruption scandals and the latest development has drawn critics out of their shells.

They say Nana Akuffo-Ado’s regime has failed to crackdown on corruption as earlier promised.
