Breaking: President Mohamed Bazoum of Niger held in coup attempt
Reports from the Republic of Niger say presidential guards in the country have seized President Mohamed Bazoum and have blockedaded his mansion as well as critical ministries.
Despite reports of a coup attempt in the West African country, no guns have been fired, BBC reported.
The African Union has criticized the events, calling them “unacceptable.”
According to the president’s administration, the guards attempted unsuccessfully to gain military support for their “anti-republican” actions.
An unidentified insider told AFP that the move was a “fit of temper” by troops.
“The Army and the National Guard are ready to attack” those involved in this incident, the president’s office said in a tweet. “The President of the Republic and his family are doing well,” it added.
The West African bloc (Ecowas) has issued a statement calling the events in Niger an “attempted coup” and condemned “the attempt to seize power by force.”
The body also stated that individuals implicated will be held accountable.
Josep Borrell, the European Union’s foreign policy leader, has also faulted the unfortunate incident in the West African country.
President Bazoum, who was democratically elected in 2021, paid a recent visit to Nigeria where he and his other counterparts from the ECOWAS bloc condemned repeated military take overs in West Africa.
