Akpabio Under Fire: LP Senator’s Strong Words—’Are We Your Slaves’
The lawmakers of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) made replacements for Simon Mwadkwon, the senator representing Plateau North, and Darlington Nwokocha, the senator representing Abia Central, both of whom were removed by the Court of Appeal.
Senator Mwadkwon, a PDP member and former minority leader, was succeeded by the PDP lawmakers, while Senator Nwokocha of the Labour Party (LP) and former minority whip was also replaced by the PDP representatives.
Following the announcements made by the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, based on the minority caucus’s decisions, a dispute erupted on the parliamentary floor.
Senator Tony Nwoye of Anambra North voiced his objection, expressing his dissatisfaction with the Senate President appointing leaders on their behalf.
In a heated exchange, Nwoye exclaimed, “Are we your slaves? Why will the Senate president be picking leaders for us? You have done your worst.
You have pushed us to the wall. Meaning what? It is unfair. It is not about me; it is about the institution of the state.”
After some senators intervened to calm Nwoye, Akpabio clarified that the two minority leaders had provided the signatories of the senators who supported the decision.
He emphasized that he could only work with the information presented to him, stating, “Minority, put your house in order first.
The Senate president can only work with what is before me. You have Senator Abaribe and Aliero; their names are not here.”
