The Liberia Drugs Enforcement Agency (LDEA) apprehended eleven individuals, comprising nine Nigerians and two Liberians, suspected of orchestrating a drug cartel in Sayon Town on Bushrod Island. The operation, led by the recently appointed LDEA director, Col. Abraham Kromah, unfolded on February 21, 2024, with residents expressing support.
The arrests were deemed a significant breakthrough in Liberia’s battle against illicit drugs, particularly amid a rising number of youths falling into wayward behavior due to substance abuse. Two Liberian females, Hawa Tamba (28) and Shelly Sheaton (17), were detained on suspicions of facilitating the illicit drug transactions within the community.
Among the Nigerian nationals under investigation were George Ikpechukwu, also known as Original Japan, allegedly an auto-parts dealer, and Mr. Sunday Odeh. The remaining suspects included Peter Momat, Edwin Ozioko, Brigston Harris, Iglwe David, Ndubuis Okoronkwo, China Ekwe, and Efam Jamo.
Col. Abraham Kromah briefed reporters on the successful operation, revealing that the arrests, including that of notorious figure “Original Japan,” were made following a tip-off from an anonymous whistleblower. The suspects were apprehended in a carefully executed strike-action aimed at curbing the surge of narcotics in the area, aligning with LDEA’s mission to support government initiatives against drug abuse and trafficking.
The alleged drug cartel’s activities are currently under investigation by the Liberia National Police (LNP). The suspects were found in possession of a substantial amount of cocaine, heroin, tramadol, and other narcotics valued at approximately Five Million Liberian dollars.
Col Kromah urged the Liberian government to enhance budgetary support for the LDEA, emphasizing the agency’s commitment to combating drug-related issues affecting the youth. He highlighted the impact on communities like Sayon Town, where residents lived in fear due to drug-induced criminal activities.
“This is our first operation, and we will continue to strengthen our team of agents nationwide. Those arrested today will be fully prosecuted according to the laws of this country,” Col. Kromah affirmed, as residents praised the LDEA for the operation that brought relief to Sayon Town.
Meanwhile, George Ikpechukwu, the alleged mastermind behind the drug activities, maintained his innocence, asserting no involvement in the illicit drug trade within the community.
