The Kwara State Fire Service successfully retrieved the body of a 49-year-old man, Fasasi Afeez, who tragically drowned while attempting to rescue his 12-year-old son from a domestic well in Offa town.
Hassan Adekunle, the spokesperson for the fire service, issued a statement revealing that the incident occurred around 4:00 PM on Thursday, February 22, 2024, at Gaa Jangbo, Igbonna Road, in Offa local government area of the state.
According to Adekunle, the man’s son, Kaleed Afeez, fell into the well while fetching water. Despite Fasasi’s brave efforts to rescue his son before the arrival of fire servicemen, his legs slipped off the ground, leading to his own tragic fall into the well.
The statement read, “On February 22, 2024, a man of about 49 years old, Mr. Fasasi Afeez, and his son Kaleed Afeez of Gaa Jangbo, Igbonna Road, Offa, Offa local government area, Kwara state, fell into a domestic well, and we recovered the father dead while we were able to rescue the son alive at New Maselu Village, Offa.”
The Brigade was alerted to the incident through a phone call from Alhaji Taiye Gbadamosi, a resident in the neighborhood, around 4:11 PM. The firemen promptly responded, recovering the lifeless body of the father and successfully rescuing the son from the well. The body was later handed over to one of the family members.
The report revealed that the victim, Fasasi Afeez, had gone to fetch water from the domestic well when one of his legs slipped off the ground, leading to the tragic accident. The father’s attempt to save his son resulted in another unfortunate fall.
Expressing his sorrow over the incident, Prince Falade John Olumuyiwa, the Director of Kwara State Fire Service, urged the public to exercise caution in their daily activities. He specifically advised parents to refrain from sending underage children to fetch water from domestic wells, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing safety in such tasks.
