Customs Boss Affirms Exclusive Presidential Authority In Reopening Borders Amid Hunger Crisis
The Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Mr. Adewale Adeniyi, asserted that the sole authority to reopen the country’s borders lies with President Bola Tinubu.
The statement was made on Saturday March 9, 2024 during an interaction session with the Kongolam border community in Mai’adua Local Government Area of Katsina State.
While addressing the ongoing agitation for border reopening, Adeniyi reassured the public that consultations were underway to address the issue. He emphasized that a decision would be reached once the consultations were concluded.
Adeniyi highlighted the Service’s commitment to facilitating free trade, aligning with the current administration’s goal of promoting economic prosperity. Proactive measures, such as reducing the number of checkpoints along the borders and fostering collaboration between Service personnel and traders, have been implemented.
Acknowledging the concerns of border communities, especially regarding checkpoints and border closures, Adeniyi assured the public that the Service operates within the confines of the law and adheres to established procedures.
