JUST-IN: Edo Assembly Suspends Three Lawmakers Amid Impeachment Allegations

The Edo House of Assembly took decisive action on Monday, suspending three lawmakers allegedly involved in a plot to impeach Speaker Blessing Agbebaku and other key officers. Speaker Agbebaku made the announcement regarding the suspension of the trio during the Assembly’s plenary session in Benin, the state capital.

Identified as Donald Okogbe (PDP Akoko-Edo II), Bright Iyamu (PDP-Orhionmwon South), and Adeh Isibor (PDP-Esan North East I), these lawmakers were indefinitely suspended by Agbebaku over accusations of scheming to alter the house’s leadership.

Agbebaku claimed that the suspended trio had succumbed to external influences aiming to sow discord and oust the house’s leadership. Furthermore, he alleged that individuals had introduced traditional practitioners into the assembly during the early hours of Wednesday, May 1, 2024, for purported ritual activities, escalating tensions within the legislative body.

The suspension prompted immediate dissent from the affected lawmakers, who argued against Agbebaku’s unilateral decision, insisting on a vote by fellow members. Following the outcry, the Speaker abruptly adjourned the plenary session.

The incident underscores heightened tensions within the Edo Assembly, highlighting the fragility of its internal dynamics amidst allegations of subversion and external interference.
