Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has sanctioned the demotion of three inspectors, reverting them to the rank of sergeant due to their alleged involvement in Extortion.
In a statement released on Friday, Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, conveyed the decision made by the IGP.
The affected officers, namely Osagie Efford, Semiu Agbekin, and Francis Ahuen, were serving with the Special Tactical Squad (STS) in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT.
According to the statement, the demoted officers apprehended an unregistered Mercedes Benz in the Gwarinpa area of the territory and coerced its occupants into surrendering a total sum of N29.4m.
The statement detailed, “Inspectors Osagie Efford, Semiu Agbekin, and Francis Ahuen, formerly of the Special Tactical Squad (STS), have been demoted to the rank of Sergeant for their involvement in extorting motorists in Abuja.
“The trio intercepted an unregistered Mercedes Benz in Gwarinpa, Abuja, and compelled its occupants to relinquish a total of N29.4m.
“Following a report by one Harrison Gwamnishu (@HarrisonBBi18) through the social media platform ‘X’, the matter was investigated thoroughly.
“Upon the return of the extorted funds to the complainants and a subsequent orderly room trial as per the relevant laws, the officers have been demoted,” he said.
