Students of the University of Ibadan in Oyo State are currently protesting over introduction of a 10-hour daily electricity supply within the campus.
It was gathered that the institution introduced a 10-hour daily electricity supply with effect from yesterday (Tuesday).
This is contained in a memo issued by the department of works and maintenance of the institution dated 16th July, 2024, and was signed by the Director of Works, Engineer O.A. Adetolu.
The letter reads, “Effective immediately, the Vice-Chancellor has approved 10-hour daily electricity supply on Campus as follows: 1. Day Time: 08 a.m. 02 p.m. (6 hours) 2. Night Time: 10 p.m. 02 a.m. (4 hours) Kindly adhere strictly to the approved schedule. Thank you”.
It was however, gathered that all the gates to the institution have been locked, there subjecting users to untold hardships.
A student, who claimed anonymity said students have started protesting since yesterday night (Tuesday).
He added that the protest continued till this morning.
“The University of Ibadan introduced the notice that it would start rationing a 10-hour electricity distribution on campus.
“This follows an outrageous increment in fees, introduction of inexplicable and duplicated fees like utility levy, which is 20,000, among other unconscionable fees.”
