PAG Calls for Active Voter Participation Ahead of 2027 Elections

The Political Awareness Group (PAG) has renewed its call for unity, inclusive political engagement, and massive voter participation as part of early preparations for the 2027 General Elections.

It also urged Muslims in Oyo State to overcome political apathy and play active roles in shaping the state’s future.

These formed part of discussion at the conclusion of a one-day retreat held on January 17, 2026, at the Aare Abdul Azeez Arisekola Alao Central Mosque, Iwo Road, Ibadan.

The retreat brought together grassroots coordinators, scholars, electoral stakeholders, and community leaders from across the state for intensive dialogue on leadership, representation, and civic responsibility.

According to a statement jointly signed by the Chairman, Dr. Lukman Tunde Fasasi, and the Secretary General, Adesola Miftaudeen Bamidele, PAG stressed that democracy thrives on participation and inclusiveness, noting that disengagement from the electoral process only weakens collective influence. The group encouraged Muslims, particularly those disillusioned by past electoral experiences, to remain steadfast and committed to peaceful democratic participation.

While affirming the aspiration for fair representation, PAG emphasized that its political engagement strategy would remain broad-based and people-oriented.

The group resolved to develop programmes that address the concerns of all voters, irrespective of religious or political affiliations, positioning itself as a bridge-builder committed to unity in diversity.

The retreat also highlighted the need for stronger grassroots mobilisation, especially among youths and women, whom PAG identified as critical drivers of political change.

“Plans are underway to establish a women’s wing to enhance political awareness and participation among Muslim women, while targeted outreach initiatives will engage young people across the state”

Resource persons at the retreat included renowned academics and electoral experts who delivered thought-provoking lectures on voter apathy, leadership responsibility, and strategic preparation for elections. The Resident Electoral Commissioner of Osun State, Dr. Mutiu Agboke, Prof. Abideen Olaiya and Prof. AbdulHafis Oladosu, all underscored the importance of collaboration between civil society groups and electoral institutions, a position that resonated strongly with participants.

In a significant development, the retreat also witnessed the inauguration of a Shurah Committee tasked with overseeing the emergence of new PAG executives later in 2026, reinforcing internal democracy and accountability within the group.

Despite funding challenges that tested the resolve of organisers, the retreat recorded an impressive turnout, with delegates from almost all the 33 local government areas of Oyo State in attendance. Participants commended the resilience and commitment demonstrated in ensuring the programme held as scheduled.

At the close of the event, PAG urged all eligible citizens to take advantage of the continuous voters’ registration exercise, describing it as a fundamental civic duty and a critical step toward meaningful participation in governance.

The group reaffirmed its commitment to peaceful advocacy, strategic partnerships, and enhanced media engagement as it continues to mobilise citizens toward a more inclusive, participatory, and accountable political process in Oyo State.
