Just in: Nigerian government accuses Peter Obi of treason
The Federal Government has accused the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, and his running mate, Datti Baba-Ahmed Yusuf, of treason.
The federal government alleged that both persons have been inciting Nigerians to violence and insurrection following the outcome of the February 25 presidential election.
This is coming barely some weeks after the candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress, Bola Tinubu, won a keenly contested presidential poll.
The spokesperson to the FG, Lai Mohammed, gave the government’s position during engagements with journalists in Washington DC in the United States.
Mr Mohammed, who is the information minister of the outgoing Muhammadu Buhari-led government, accused Peter Obi of treason.
While holding interactions with some media organisations in the US, the minister said it was wrong for the Labour Party candidate to seek redress in court over the outcome of the election and incite people to violence at the same time.
“Obi and his Vice, Datti-Ahmed cannot be threatening Nigerians that if the President-elect, Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) is sworn in on May 29, it will be the end of democracy in Nigeria.
“This is treason. You cannot be inviting insurrection, and this is what they are doing.
“Obi’s statement is that of a desperate person, he is not a democrat that he claimed to be.
“A democrat should not believe in democracy only when he wins election,” he said.
“The constitution has stringent criteria for anybody who wants to be president of the country.
“Not only must he have the plurality of votes cast in an election, he must also have scored one-quarter of votes cast in at least 25 states.
While commenting on the reason for his visit to the United States, the minister said his journey to Washington became necessary to refute the negative stories that were being spread by the opposition and skeptics.
Speaking on the performance of the BVAS machine, the Minister noted the system worked 97 per cent giving unparalleled credibility to the elections.
