Nigeria’s former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, will on Friday know his fate as he and his wife are about to be sentenced in Britain for plotting to harvest a man’s kidney for his sick daughter.

Ekweremadu was found guilty in March at London’s Old Bailey criminal court of conspiring to traffic the young street trader into Britain for his body part in the first case of its kind in the United Kingdom.

Beatrice Ekweremadu, Ekweremadu’s wife, and Obinna Obeta, a doctor who acted as a middleman in the plot, were also convicted. They will be sentenced today as well.

However, the Ekweremadus’ daughter, Sonia, was cleared of the same charge.

Integrity News reported that the House of Representatives called on the United Kingdom’s government and the judicial system in the country to temper justice with mercy in sentencing Senator Ike Ekweremadu, who was found guilty of “organ trafficking” in March.

Also, the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, parliament pleaded with a UK court to show mercy to Ike Ekweremadu and his wife.

In a letter addressed to the chief clerk of the central criminal court, Old Bailey, London, the speaker of the parliament, Sidie Tunis, said Ekweremadu contributed greatly to the ECOWAS parliament while he was the speaker of the third legislature.

It is legal in the United Kingdom to donate a kidney for monetary or material gain.

It was the first time charges of organ harvesting conspiracy were brought under the UK’s 2015 Modern Slavery Act.

The maximum sentence under the law is life in prison.
