The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has disclosed that a total of 2,246 Nigerians have so far been evacuated from Sudan.

The Head of Media, Public Relations and Protocols Unit of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) Mr Abdur-Rahman Balogun, disclosed this in Abuja, while giving updates on the Federal Government’s evacuation efforts since May 3.

Many of the evacuees are largely students and other Nigerians residing in the north African country.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) earlier dispatched assorted food items to the Nigerian Embassy in Sudan to cater for stranded Nigerians waiting to be evacuated to Nigeria from the embattled northeast African country.

In a statement by Manzo Ezikiel, NEMA spokesperson, Mustapha Ahmed, the agency’s director-general, said the food items consisted 100 bags of rice, 50 bags of beans, 10 cartons of seasoning, 50 cartons of spaghetti and 5 bags of iodized salt.

Many foreigners, including hundreds of Nigerians, have been airlifted back home from Sudan after fighting broke out between the Sudanese army and rival paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, RSF.

Recall that the first batch of Nigerians evacuated from Sudan through Egypt by Air Peace arrived at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja at about 11:30 pm Nigerian time on 3rd of May, 2023.

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) plane conveying another set of Nigerians also landed at the airport in Abuja at about 12 am Nigerian time.

The evacuees received ₦100,000 each from the Aliko Dangote Foundation (ADF) upon their arrival.

The Foundation said the support is part of efforts to assist the government in carrying out humanitarian activities.
