Breaking: NLC, TUC call off planned strike
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have suspended their strike, originally planned for Wednesday.
The decision followed the meeting between representatives from the federal government and the organised labour at the Presidential Villa on Monday evening.
The main focus of the discussion was the removal of fuel subsidy.
Speaking about the latest development, Festus Keyamo, Minister of State for Labour and Employment, who was one of the negotiators expressed his satisfaction with the outcome, stating, “Earlier today, I was called upon to join the negotiations with my colleagues in the NLC and TUC, and I am pleased to report that we have reached several agreements, leading to the suspension of the proposed strike action.”
“The meeting concluded at precisely 10:40 pm,” he added.
Also, the National Industrial Court has issued an injunction, preventing the unions from engaging in any form of strike.
Justice O.Y. Anuwe granted the injunction in response to an ex parte application submitted to the court. It restrains the defendants (TUC and NLC) from proceeding with the nationwide strike planned for Wednesday until the hearing and determination of the motion of notice filed on June 5, 2023.
The court has ordered that the defendants be promptly served with the necessary legal documents, including the originating processes, the motion on notice, and the court’s order.
The hearing for the Motion of Notice has been scheduled for June 19, 2023, as indicated in the court document.
The federal government and the Attorney General of the Federation are the applicants in this matter.
