Donald Trump to appear in court over handling of classified files
The legal team representing the former US President, Donald Trump says the politician will appear in a federal court in Miami on Tuesday after he was charged over his handling of classified documents.
Mr. Trump, 76, is accused of mishandling secret documents and hindering efforts to conduct an investigation into how the documents were stored at his Florida residence, according to his attorney.
Mr. Trump says an aide of his, Walt Nauta, was also charged alongside him over the case.
This is the second time the former US leader will be criminally charged in three months.
According to legal experts, Mr. Trump, who plans to run for president again in 2024, could go to jail if found guilty of mishandling the government files or of hindering the investigation into whether he did.
Meanwhile, two of Donald Trump’s lawyers, Jim Trusty and John Rowley, have announced their resignation from his legal team.
The lawyers said: “This morning we tendered our resignations as counsel to President Trump, and we will no longer represent him on either the indicted case or the 6 January investigation,” they said in a statement.
In response to the resignations from his lawyers, Donald Trump has taken to his social-media platform, Truth Social, to announce a shake-up to his team of lawyers.
“For purposes of fighting the Greatest Witch Hunt of all time, now moving to the Florida Courts, I will be represented by Todd Blanche, Esq., and a firm to be named later,” Trump announced.
He appreciated Jim Trusty and John Rowley for their work but accused the lawyers of being dishonest, corrupt and evil.
Trump said: “I want to thank Jim Trusty and John Rowley for their work, but they were up against a very dishonest, corrupt, evil, and “sick” group of people, the likes of which has not been seen before.”
The indictment – a document which details the charges against the former US President- has not yet been released to the public.
Trump, who is contesting for president again in 2024, repeatedly denied the allegation against him said he “never thought it possible that such a thing could happen to a former president of the United States”.
