Delegates from the Sudanese Army have arrived in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, to resume negotiations with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) following three months of violent clashes between the army and the RSF.

Previous discussions in Jeddah, facilitated by Saudi Arabia and the United States, were suspended in early June due to violation of several ceasefire agreements.

Saudi Arabia and the United States have yet to announce the resumption of talks between Sudan’s warring factions.

As part of efforts to end the clashes, Egypt launched a mediation effort on Thursday, which was hailed by both the Sudanese army, which has close connections with Egypt, and the RSF.

The conflict in Sudan has dragged on for yet another month with a succession of ceasefires that have failed to prevent the bloodshed that erupted on April 15 as the army and RSF struggle for power.

More than 3 million people have been displaced as a result of the fighting, with over 700,000 fleeing to neighboring countries.

Recall that the British government joined the United States in imposing sanctions on the warring parties in Sudan. The sanction imposed an asset freeze on six businesses linked to the Sudanese Army and the Rapid Support Forces.

Andrew Mitchell, a British government minister, said that the Sudanese army and rival Rapid Support Forces (RSF) had driven their country into an unnecessary war.
