Remember that Deputy Governor Philips Shaibu and his principal, Governor Godwin Obaseki, had previously clashed over Shaibu’s gubernatorial aspirations.

Reports indicated that Obaseki, seemingly opposed to his deputy succeeding him, was supporting Dr. Asue Ighodalo, the chairman of the Board of Trustees, Alaghodaro Economic Summit Ltd/Gte, as his preferred successor.

Nevertheless, Shaibu has been actively engaging in consultations with politicians and the media regarding his intention to contest.

He recently met with journalists in Abuja over the weekend, and it is anticipated that a similar meeting will take place in Lagos on Tuesday.

A close aide to Shaibu disclosed to The PUNCH on Monday, “If everything goes according to his plans, he will officially declare his intention next week.

He has already secured a campaign office along Airport Road, campaign vehicles have started arriving, and consultations have reached an advanced stage.

He has garnered endorsements from his kinsmen and met with various groups, including the media, in recent weeks.

He is prepared for the race, and all he needs to do is declare his intention next week, all things being equal.”

During a discussion with journalists in Abuja on Saturday, Shaibu expressed his desire to succeed Obaseki, citing the urgent need for practical governance in Edo State. He emphasized the importance of avoiding experimentation with someone unfamiliar with the politics and needs of the state.
