Teenager Sent To Correctional Center For Fatal Stabbing Of Imam In Kano

In Kano on January 10, a Chief Magistrates’ Court mandated the detention of an 18-year-old named Yusuf Haruna in a correctional facility over the alleged fatal stabbing of Imam Malam Sani Mohammed.

Residing in Tudun Nufawa Quarters Kano, the defendant faces charges of culpable homicide, as presented by Prosecutor Mrs. Fatima Ado-Ahmad. The case was reported by Musa Yunusa of the same address to Jakara Police Division Kano on December 31, 2023.

The prosecution asserted that around 7 p.m., the defendant assaulted the 45-year-old Imam, inflicting a fatal stab wound to his back with a sharp knife. The victim was swiftly taken to Murtala Muhammed Specialist Hospital, where a doctor confirmed his demise due to the severity of the injuries.

Despite the defendant’s denial of the allegations, the prosecutor argued that the act violated the provisions of Section 221 of the Penal Code. Chief Magistrate Binta Galadanchi ordered the remand of the defendant in a correctional facility and scheduled the case for further mention on January 31.

Additionally, Yusuf’s father, Haruna Sani, faced charges at the Chief Magistrates’ Court for concealing his son following the Imam’s murder. Accused of screening an offender, the defendant, residing in Tudun Nufawa Quarters Kano, entered a plea of not guilty.

According to the prosecution counsel, Ado-Ahmad, on December 31, 2023, the defendant allegedly hid his son, Yusuf, after the fatal stabbing. The prosecutor opposed the bail application by the defense counsel, Ahmad Rufa’i, urging the court to consider bail based on constitutional provisions and the ACJL 2019 Kano State.

Galadanchi, however, ordered the remand of the defendant in a correctional facility and scheduled the ruling on the bail application for January 31.
