Borno Police command orders probe into officer’s killing over Indian hemp possession by soldier
The Borno State Police Command is investigating a shocking incident in which a soldier allegedly shot dead Sgt Ahmed Ali who reportedly intercepted the soldier’s vehicle, which was believed to be carrying a substance that was later identified as Indian hemp.
It is alleged that an incident occurred at an entry point in Benishek, Kaga Local Government Area on Monday, when soldiers in an Acura Sport Utility Vehicle, driven by Sgt. U Joseph, refused to submit to a proper inspection.
ASP Nahum Daso, the spokesperson of the Borno State Police Command, verified the incident on Wednesday and stated that the command is currently conducting an investigation, according to the Punch daily.
ASP Daso said “we are still investigating; because of the sensitivity of the case, we have to investigate thoroughly…, hopefully, we will conclude investigation today (Wednesday, April 19), and will address the press hopefully tomorrow (Thursday, April 20).”
He added that “the issue is highly sensitive, and it involves a lot of ambiguities. We have to be very careful and thorough in the investigation duty given the sensitivity involved.”
It was gathered that locals and security sources confirmed that the incident occurred at the town’s entry checkpoint around 10 am on Monday.
According to royal news, a security source said the soldier in question was driving ‘an ash-coloured Acura sport utility vehicle with the registration number FKJ 761 AR, beat a security checkpoint and refused to stop despite a warning from the police.’
Multiple sources revealed that police team shot at the soldier’s tyre, in an attempt force him to stop, but sadly, Sgt Ali was shot dead by the soldiers while trying to drive the vehicle to Benisheikh police station.
Another source said “the soldier carrying the Indian hemp, identified as Sgt U. Joseph, along with his other colleagues, tried to stop the Crack Squad from confiscating the vehicle, which led to the shooting and Sgt Ali who was reversing with the vehicle got killed by the bullet,”
The suspect is currently being held by the military, while the vehicle involved in the incident is located at Benisheikh police station.
According to a source from the military, the shooting was a mistake made by soldier Ibrahim Waberi, who was attempting to prevent the deceased from moving the vehicle.
