FG orders immigration CG to transfer power to highest ranking officer

Idris Isah, Comptroller General of Nigeria Immigration Service

The Comptroller General of Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Idris Isah, has mandated by the federal government to step down and handover power to the most senior officer to take over the affairs of the NIS as he is set to depart the organization on April 24.

This directive came as some officers are planning to demonstrate against the reported plan of the current CG to stay in office for a longer period.

It was reported that the CG, who was due to retire on April 24 last year, was granted an extension of one year and is now reportedly seeking to extend his tenure again for another twelve months.

However, some officers, concerned that the alleged extension of service would lead to unrest and disorder in the military, wrote to President Muhammadu Buhari in an attempt to stop it. They even threatened to protest if the extension was declared illegal.

In a memo issued on April 17, 2023, the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board ordered the National Immigration Service (NIS) boss to transfer leadership to the Deputy Comptroller General by Monday, April 24, 2023, while the President appoints a new Comptroller General.

This memo is in response to the recent developments that have led to the resignation of the Comptroller General of the Nigerian Immigration Service.

Signed by Obasi Edozie Edmund, the acting secretary to the Board, the memo reminded the outgoing CG of the one year tenure extension granted to him by the president for 2022.
