The presidency has clarified whether President Muhammadu Buhari, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, and cabinet members can keep their government vehicles after they leave office.

President Buhari, Vice President Osinbajo, and cabinet ministers would not be allowed to keep their official vehicles once their terms expire, according to the presidency.

It was also announced that President Buhari and Vice President Osinbajo would pass over their armoured luxury vehicles to their successors, Bola Tinubu and his deputy, Kashim Shettima.

It further stated that ministers’ severance pay will be in accordance with the rules established by the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission.

In an interview with the Punch newspaper, Garba Shehu, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, highlighted that no one is entitled to government cars. Instead, project vehicles are used, which may only be sold after four years of depletion of their book value.

“Don’t expect that because ministers are leaving, they will carry their vehicles under Buhari. It is not going to happen. If the ministers are not taking their vehicles along, you don’t expect the president to take any. It is not going to happen,” he said.

Shehu added that former presidents and vice presidents are already granted a specific number of vehicles according to the provisions of the law.

He noted that this may be updated after a certain period while noting that President Buhari would adhere to this arrangement and not place himself above his predecessors.

Experts estimate that the President and Vice President currently drive 2019 Mercedes-Benz Maybach S650 bullet-proof vehicles valued at least ₦300 million.
