FG enlists support of traditional rulers to promote national unity
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has met with some first-class traditional rulers across the country.
The meeting which was held on Friday June 9, 2023, took place at the Old Banquet Hall, Presidential Villa, Abuja.
According to a report, the meeting is part of President Tinubu’s consultations with key national stakeholders to cover a wide range of national issues including how to promote unity and reconciliation.
The Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’adu Abubakar, who led his colleagues to the meeting, said in his opening remarks that the traditional leaders visited the president to congratulate him and to pledge their support in the enormous responsibility of administering the country.
The Sultan of Sokoto, who is regarded as the leader of the Muslims in Nigeria, pointed out that the council of traditional rulers is full of experts from many different domains of human endeavor, making the council a good resource for the President to draw knowledge from.
He pledged that “the traditional leaders will be available at the president’s service at all times anytime he seeks for their assistance.”
Also speaking, the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Adewusi, called on Tinubu to make more use of the traditional rulers especially in tackling insecurity, saying, “Mr. President, use us. Use us. Use us.”
Those present at the meeting were Vice-President Kashim Shettima; the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume; Sultan of Sokoto, the Ooni of Ife, Emir of Kano and Obi of Onitsha, Tor Tiv.
Others were Etsu Nupe, Deji of Akure, SGF, Shehu of Borno, Permanent Secretary, Elegushi of Ikate, Jaja of Opobo, Lamido of Adamawa, Emir of Zauzzau, Gbong Gwom Jos, Attah Igala, Alake of Egbaland, Shehu of Borno, and the representative of the Oba of Benin.
