Saudi-US negotiators reach fresh ceasefire agreement in Sudan

Saudi-US mediators have announced a fresh attempted ceasefire agreement between the warring Sundanese Army and rival paramilitary Rapid Support Forces.

The Saudi foreign ministry confirmed that the two warring sides had agreed to a 24-hour truce which is expected to start on Saturday at 05:00 GMT.

The foreign ministry cautioned the warring parties that it would consider suspending peace efforts if the ceasefire failed.

All sides expect that the 24-hour ceasefire will give them the chance to resume peace discussions in Jeddah and send humanitarian aid to people caught up in the violence.

Saudi Arabia and the United States have been leading mediation efforts since the beginning of the fighting in Sudan in April.

Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia has condemned an attack on its embassy which took place overnight in Sudan’s capital, Khartoum.

The Saudi foreign ministry also said the country’s personnel’ homes and property had been vandalized and accused armed groups for the unrest in Khartoum without naming any specific party.

More than 1800 people have been killed since the fighting began between the Army and the RSF.

So far, half of Sudan’s population, according to the UN, requires relief and protection at this time while adding that 1.2 million have been displaced, with more than 425,000 fleeing abroad.
