Al Ahly conquers Wydad Casablanca to win 2023 CAF Champions League

Al Ahly of Egypt on Sunday came from a goal down to play a 1-1 draw with Wydad Athletic Club in Casablanca, Morocco, to snatch a record 11th TotalEnergies CAF Champions League glory.

The Red Devils won the game with a 3-2 aggregate score, having recorded a 2-1 success at home in the first leg in Cairo last weekend.

In the 27th minute, Wydad’s defender Yahia Attiyat Allah scored the first goal in the match, to give his team an edge.

The slender lead would not last long as the Red Devils came back into the game in the 78th minute, when Al Ahly’s defender Mohamed Abdelmonem scored, bringing the game to a tie.

The Egyptian team ran away with the trophy based on away goal rules. Away goals count double in the African Champions League whenever clubs cannot be separated after 90 minutes.

The latest success is the third Champions League triumph in four seasons for Al Ahly after they conquered fellow Egyptians Zamalek in 2020 and Kaizer Chiefs of South Africa the following year.

The team will smile home with a record four million dollars for winning the continental inter-club competition.

The victorious Al Ahly made it to the final by beating Raja Casablanca of Morocco in the quarter-finals and Esperance Tunis in the semi-finals, while maintaining clean records in their previous four Champions League matches.
